Incorporated in March 2003, the UCNS has achieved five years of business development success. There are currently eight subspecialty members with the UCNS since its creation:
- Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry (June 2004)
- Clinical Neuromuscular Pathology (February 2005)
- Headache Medicine (March 2005)
- Neuro-Oncology (May 2005)
- Neuroimaging (June 2005)
- Neurocritical Care (October 2005)
- Autonomic Disorders (May 2007)

Each UCNS subspecialty member has demonstrated that an organizational structure exists capable of developing and sustaining the accreditation and certification of fellows trained in the subspecialty. All have a comprehensive definition of the subspecialty in the form that supports the development of examination specifications and competencies as well as a comprehensive set of training requirements to support accredited training programs.
One or more national organizational sponsors have represented the interests of the subspecialty and provide the experts necessary to support the required accreditation and certification activities through the UCNS.
